Quarterback
Trevone Boykin
If you believe talent reigns supreme then Boykin is your supreme quarterback for Championship Week. There are multiple ways to go here and you simply are going to have to choose. There a couple of guys I don’t mind further down the pay scale, but for cash games I think I will spend up for safety. Boykin is expected to be back to 100% health after suffering an ankle injury. That bodes quite well for his skill set as his ability to make plays with his feet is directly related to his fantasy appeal. Prior to his injury Boykin was about as good as it gets failing to top 37 fantasy points just once, which was a week 1 road test against Minnesota. Oregon seems to have gotten their offense in sync and I suspect there will be quite a few points scored in this one. Even though Boykin no longer has all-world receiver, Josh Doctson, at his disposal he still has enough weapons and most importantly his best weapon is back, his feet. He’s costly for sure, but it’s hard to argue there is a better way to spend money.
Dak Prescott
Even though Boykin has the track record to support his top status my man pots and pans Dak Prescott can bring it home as well. Like Boykin he is a dual threat quarterback who has more than enough passing capabilities to keep defenses guessing. Mississippi State actually passes the ball quite a bit which could be attributed to the lack of a consistent rushing attack. Dak can do it all and as long as the matchup is ripe he’s as good as anyone. The matchup is ripe and it takes the form of NC State. The Wolf Pack really struggled against Marquis Williams and DeShaun Watson. I’ll save the argument of who the better quarterback is for another. Just know Dak is in the same conversation as those guys and should have similar success against NC State.
Running Back
Leonard Fournette
Speaking of spending money, Fournette’s salary is back at peak levels. Fournette fizzled a bit down the stretch dashing his hopes of the Heisman. Some of his struggles, and I use that term loosely, can be attributed to his team just not being all that explosive on offense. Fournette basically is their offense so when they got into the thick of their SEC schedule LSU simply didn’t put the points on the board. Texas Tech is a quality team, but their not Bama or Ole Miss and LSU should have a much easier time making things happen when they have the ball. What I mean by that is Leonard is going to run wild. Tech hasn’t stopped anyone all year and it’s certainly not going to start when they face one of the best backs in the country. His cost is high, but I think he is worth every dollar.
Wendell Smallwood
Coming in considerably less, but still strong value is Smallwood. He’s been recommended on here quite a bit, but his price just never caught up to his output. Smallwood shares a few carries with Shell, but nothing concerning. WVU generally runs a balanced offense, but they lack talent on the outside allowing for plenty of scoring opportunities for Wendell. Smallwood really is the catalyst for the Mountaineer offense and given he is a 3-down back I like him to be involved on the ground and through the air. His volume should be pretty high and his price won’t kill you either. Vegas is saying this will be a very close game with WVU a 1pt favorite. The game total is around 65 so both teams are expected to score their fair share.
Wide Receiver
Sterling Shepard
Receiver as a whole isn’t great as there a lot of guys all capable of putting up nice stats, but are also capable of putting in a very underwhelming performance. In a vacuum I really like Shepard’s price considering his role in the offense and his expected opportunity when he faces Clemson. We’re not in a vacuum and rostering Shepard along with the big money plays at the other positions could prove to be difficult. Oklahoma is generally a team that prefers to run the ball and I don’t expect that to change in their upcoming bowl game. That said, Sterling is their only true threat in the passing game and with defenses gearing up to stop the run it leaves Shepard with plenty of room to run in the secondary. Sterling has scored a touchdown in 5 straight games to go along with his 47 receptions over that same span. Compared to the field he is the clear choice and I will look to make the money work to fit him along with Fournette and Boykin.
Fred Ross
If you need a little salary relief without taking a shot in the dark Ross is the perfect fit. I actually think Ross is better value than Shepard, but he doesn’t have the same ceiling. Over his last 4 games Ross has 41 receptions for 500 yards and 3 scores. DeRyunna Wilson is certainly still in the mix and is a better red zone target, but Ross is the meat and potatoes of the Bulldogs’ passing attack. NCST has had it’s troubles on both sides of the ball, but have also turned in some nice performances. Vegas has State as 6pt favorites with a total around 60, but I think that total is a little conservative. I think they will struggle against Dak & Co., but I also think they will score some points of their own. Ross should once again receive heavy volume as Mississippi State edges NCST in a close victory.
Tight End
Jake Butt
Look, he has a funny name, I get it, but in the land of DFS we don’t discriminate in any way. The truth is Butt is a darn good pass catching tight end and should find himself on an NFL roster some day. I know I have an eye on him for the dynasty league I’m in that awards 2pts PPR for tight ends. The other truth is I am looking to save every dollar possible and could find myself going with the best 2k option.
