Boise State vs. Northern Illinois
Boise St. -9, o/u 57
Game Preview: Both teams expected to find themselves in a more notable Bowl game, but here they are. Similarly, both teams suffered injuries to the quarterback position. Boise lost Finley early on and Rypien has come along nicely running the offense. The real story for Boise is Jeremy “The Weapon” McNichols. The guy is a one man show capable of beating you in multiple ways. Northern Illinois will be in for a long day if they cannot at least slow McNichols down. Completing the triple threat is Thomas Sperbeck who led the Broncos in every relevant receiving category. The Huskies lost their starting quarterback, Drew Hare, as well, but also lost Graham to injury towards the end of the year. It sounds like the Huskies are expected to have Graham back so at least they will have their 2nd string QB. The Huskies have talented players on offense in Bouagnon and Golladay plus Tommylee Lewis, if he is able to suit up. Northern Illinois should have some offensive moments, but Boise will be too much to handle over 60 minutes.
Fantasy Analysis: This is a great game to have exposure too. The weather could be a little iffy for the next game making things a little cloudy, no pun intended. McNichols is crazy expensive, but worth every penny as the sure fire cash play. Sperbeck is too expensive on FanDuel, but very much in play on Draftkings. As talented as Bouagnon is I am keeping him relegated to my GPP lineups only. I like Golladay now that Graham is expected back and on the super short FanDuel slate it will tough to argue against him. If Tommylee plays he is strong value on both sites.
Prediction: 37 - 23 Boise State
Georgia Southern vs. Bowling Green
Bowling Green -7, o/u 64
Game Preview: These teams are about as opposite as it gets when it comes to what they want to do on offense. Southern attempted a total of a 129 passes on the year while the Falcons quarterback, Matt Johnson, completed 368. Led by a triple threat rushing attack, the Eagles aren’t coy about what they want to do. They want to run and they are going to run from multiple formations with multiple runners. Matt Breida is their best talent, but he is not a traditional workhorse back. The Eagles will also use LA Ramsby and quarterback Ellison will run the ball as well. Bowling Green wants to spread the field and chuck it around, but that doesn’t mean they don’t run the ball either. Their fast paced offense allows for plenty of both and they keep it somewhat balanced. The Falcons actually ran the ball more down final stretch of the regular season, but it hasn’t slowed down the production. Their receivers are a deep and talented group led by Roger Lewis and Gehrig Dieter. Travis Greene, while probably not NFL material, is quite talented at collegiate level. His ability to catch the ball makes him an excellent fit for this offense. It will be interesting to see how this game unfolds. Southern has had a pretty stingy defense all year and even took Georgia to OT, but they haven’t faced an offense quite like this one. BG, on the other hand, could struggle to stop the Eagle’s potent run game and if that’s the case could be in a real dog fight.
Fantasy Analysis: This is a really tough game to figure out, but one that you will likely want exposure too. The weather is looking a little iffy with thunderstorms expected. As good as Matt Johnson is I think he needs everything to go right for him to hit value at his current price. Greene has been seeing too much volume at the moment and the looming weather has me a little gun-shy with Johnson. I still like Dieter and if you think Roger Lewis gets back to his early season form you are getting him at a great price. As much as I like Georgia Southern they are way too hard to trust for cash games. Their volume is all over the place and as a result so is their production.
Prediction: 31-30 Georgia Southern
Middle Tennessee vs. Western Michigan
Western MIchigan -5, o/u 63.4
Game Preview: Christmas Eve brings two more Bowl Games starting with the Whoever-pays-the-most-money-to have-their-name-in-lights Bowl. Hopefully you took off from work because this one starts at high noon. This game has the potential to be a real track meet as both teams are more than capable of scoring in a hurry. Corey Davis and Daniel Braverman lead the Broncos on the outside and have given defenses fits all year. Zach Terrell is a quarterback capable of making all the throws and with Bogan and Franklin in the backfield this is a very complete offense. MTSU has a pretty capable offense as well with an equally deep roster at the skill positions. This game could be filled with plenty of big plays and plenty of points. Not a bad way to start the day before Christmas.
Fantasy Analysis: I like this game quite a bit from a fantasy perspective. Both teams have strong offenses with quick strike capabilities. The volume is fairly consistent amongst the skilled players giving us a better read on projected output. Corey Davis probably falls in the must play category as he has been absolutely dominant of late. Braverman can be considered, but the money could prove tough to roster both. I also think Bogan is in a great buy situation. He ripped off a string of great games before fizzling a bit down the stretch. He’s had rest so the legs should be fresh and people could be off him due to recent performance. Shane Tucker is pretty good value at running back if you think he remains the guy. Batties and James are a little out of my price range on Draftkings and at the moment FanDuel has not released Thursday pricing.
Prediction: 42-34 Western Michigan
San Diego State vs. Cincinnati
Game Preview: Beautiful Hawaii plays host to none other than the Hawaii Bowl. This should be more familiar territory for San Diego State as they play in the same conference as Hawaii and played on this field during the year. I’m not suggesting the Cincinnati players will be distracted by the scenic views, but it’s worth noting the lack of familiarity compared to San Diego State. The Aztecs are a ground and pound team and they certainly have the due to do so. Donnel Pumphrey and Chase Price combined for almost 2600 yards on the ground with Price just missing 1000 yards at 940. Neither back is especially big, but what they lack in size is made up for by their speed. Stopping these two will be a difficult task for the Bearcats. Cincy on the other hand sports a balanced offense with the ability to spread the field. They will be without Gunner Kiel, but Hayden Moore has proven more than capable in running the offense. If the Bearcats are to have success Moore will have to be accurate and only take what the defense is giving him. Shaq Washington and Chris Moore will need to step and create space down the field. SDST will want to control the clock so it’s imperative for Cincy to convert 3rd downs and keep their offense on the field.
Fantasy Analysis: This is a pretty solid game fantasy wise, but pricing makes it difficult to roster many of the players. Pumphrey and Price are really the only two I’m considering for the Aztecs and I don’t even mind pairing them together. They like to run the ball and both guys see enough volume at their respective prices to hit value. Shaq Washington is the surest thing for Cincy, but I would also consider Chris Moore. They have a couple deeper receivers to be considered for GPP play like Morrison and Chisum. They using a committee at running back so it gets a little hairy trying to figure out the volume.
Prediction: 31-23 San Diego State
