Miami Peach Bowl
Western Kentucky vs. South Florida
Line: WKU -2.5, 67
Game Preview: Western Kentucky comes in at 11-2 and sports a high flying offense capable of moving the ball against just about anyone. The Hilltoppers are decent on the defensive side of the ball as well, but they’re known for their offense. Doughty threw for almost 4600 yards during the regular season with 45 touchdowns. Taywan Taylor leads a deep and talented group of receivers who are sure to give the Bulls secondary fits. Don’t sleep on the run game as Anthony Wales ran for almost 1000 yards on just 141 carries. South Florida at 8-4 certainly has the better defense, but their offense really clicked down the stretch as well scoring 153 points over their last 3 games. Flowers really blossomed if you will as the season progressed and has this Bull playing it’s best football. The line indicates a close game and I guess it will be, but I like the Bulls come out on top when the final whistle blows.
Fantasy Analysis: This is a short slate and the WKU/SF game has the highest total on the board. There are quite a few options to choose from here, but I’m starting with Marlon Mack. The running back position is tough sledding, but I like Mack quite a bit. Flowers is a great option as well with his dual threat abilities and should arguably be selected ahead of the more popular Doughty. Speaking of Doughty, he’s only a few bucks more than Flowers and could have a huge game himself. Taywan Taylor, Antwane Grant, Nicholas Norris, Jared Dangerfield and in that order, are all in play. You have to pay up for Taylor, but with Higbee doubtful Taylor could see more looks. Rodney Adams is the only receiver worth consideration from South Florida.
Prediction: 44-37 South Florida
Idaho Potato Bowl
Akron vs Utah State
Line: Utah St -6.5, 47.5
Game Preview: The Idaho Potato Bowl likely won’t be an Instant Classic, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be an exciting game to watch. Okay, yes it does. Akron hasn’t been to a bowl game in a decade and with a 7-5 record the “Famous Potato Idaho Potato Bowl”, as Akron coach Terry Bowden put it, is about as good as it gets. Utah St. is giving a touchdown, but if they get solid quarterback play the margin will likely be much greater. Chuckie Keeton was supposed to have a solid senior season, but injuries and poor play is largely how things went. Kent Myers had some nice games in relief and both guys are expected to play against Akron. Hunter Sharp is a legit talent on the outside and if Akron can’t keep him contained it’s going to be a long night. The Zips will need to get their run game going to have a chance in this one, but Utah State can be tough to run against.
Fantasy Analysis: Not much to like here. The game has a low total and with the uncertainty at the quarterback position for Utah State there are few guys worth rostering. Hunter Sharp is the only guy I don’t have much reservation about using and Mays is a possibility at running back. I am not considering anyone from Akron. There just isn’t much to see here.
Prediction: 27-17 Utah State
Boca Raton Bowl
Temple vs Toledo
Line: Temple -2.5, 49.5
Game Preview: If you’re still awake from the early game god bless you, but we have one more game to go. Temple and Toledo may not be a high scoring game either, but at least it should be a good football game. Star running backs steal the spotlight in this one with Kareem Hunt for the Rockets and Jahad Thomas for my Temple Hootie Owls. Thomas opened the season like gangbusters, but it appears the beating absorbed is starting to show through. Thomas has had plenty of rest heading into the bowl game so he should be charged and ready to go. Hunt is a bigger back who started the season slowly, but has come on late. Both teams sport an average to below average receiving group with the edge going to Toledo, but it’s Temple who has the best receiver in Robbie Anderson. PJ Walker is the better quarterback and could prove to be the difference maker in the game. Both teams are solid on defense, but again Temple comes in with a slight edge in that department as well.I can see this being a bit boring at first as the teams try to feel one another out, but the 2nd half should be fun to watch. I think the team able to establish their run game takes home the hardware.
Fantasy Analysis: The game consists of some big names, but it also has the scent of a defensive battle. It’s really hard to trust anyone from Toledo given how tough Temples defense has been most of the year. Hunt is a stud and could still put together a nice game, but at his current price it just seems like too much risk. He certainly makes a nice contrarian GPP play, but that’s it for me. As we get closer to kickoff I like Thomas more and more. I still have Mack as my top RB on the slate, but I think a refreshed Thomas could break a few runs. Robbie Anderson is a solid, but not spectacular play.
Prediction: 27-20 Temple
