Sea Island Resort(Seaside) - Sea Island, GA
Par 70, 7,055 Yards
The streak of first time winners to start the year is now over. Graeme McDowell beat out Russell Knox and Jason Bohn in a playoff to pick up his first win since 2013 and first top 10 finish in 9 months. It was a weather delayed tournament that ended up having to finish on Monday morning. The Tour now heads back to the USA to close out the fall season.
We are now one week away from finishing up the fall schedule and heading into the winter break, although only until January 7th. It will be a nice break for the players to get some rest and get ready for another grind in 2016. I am also looking forward to the break to look over the year as a whole and analyse my strengths and weaknesses and continue to grow the DFS PGA product. It was a terrific first season that constantly kept getting better as I learned more through the process of research and lineup construction and promise to provide high quality information and analysis moving into the 2016 portion of the season.
For the final week of the regular schedule on the PGA Tour the players will head to Sea Island, Georgia for The RSM Classic(formely known as the McGladrey Classic). It will be a full field tournament of 156 players and will be played on two separate courses for the first two rounds. Players will play 18 holes on the Par 70(7005 Yards) Seaside Course and 18 holes on the Par 72(7033 Yards)Plantation Course. Once the cut of the top 70 and ties is established on Friday, only the Seaside Course is used for Saturday and Sunday. The Seaside Course is a classic links style golf course situated near the sea and demands accuracy, recovery and putting skills. The Plantation Course is more closed off with and lined with large Oak and Cedar trees and presents danger throughout with creeks and lakes. For the most part I will be focusing on players who are accurate off the tee, hit a hig % of greens in regulation ad can putt. It will also be key this week to be able to scramble and save par. The average score in the previous 5 years has been -14 so players will need to go -3 or -4 each day to contend on Sunday. Below are all of the stats I am using for the cheatsheet this week.
*Stat rankings are from the 2015 season*
Kevin Kisner
Draftkings - $10,400
Fantasy Feud - $158,000
He checks all the boxes this week making him my top pick for the RSM Classic. He is coming off 3 straight cuts made to start the year including a T2 last time out at the HSBC Champions. He made 3 of 4 cuts here at Sea Island including a T4 last year. His stats also lineup nicely for another solid finish this weekend.
Bill Haas
Draftkings - $10,100
Fantasy Feud - $145,000
Haas makes a great cash game play as he consistently makes cut after cut. Occasionally he can show his upside and contend in tournaments which also gives him some GPP value as well. He has played here twice in the five years the tournament has been played and finished 2nd in his first trip and 22nd lat season. His game fits the course nicely as he is an accurate driver who ranks high(31st) in GIR and he is also a good scrambler. He had an off year putting in 2015 and if he turns it around early in this new season he will have a great chance at a solid finish this weekend.
Matt Kuchar
Draftkings - $10,800
Fantasy Feud - $186,000
He let us down on Sunday/Monday last week as he shot a 76 and finished T68. His issue was the extremely low greens in regulation he was hitting. It was an issue throughout the entire tournament for Kuchar which was masked by his great putting. The finish last week should drive his ownership down as recency bias will definitely be in play. He has played here in 4 of the 5 years and has never missed a cut at Sea Island and hasn't finished worse than 25th. Look for Kuchar to rebound this week.
Kevin Chappell
Draftkings - $9,000
Fantasy Feud - $102,000
He is a golfer that is trending in the right direction to start the new season. He missed the cut at the Frys.com, finished T62 the next week at the Shriners and is coming off a T29 at the CIMB Classic. His worst stat last season(stats that I am using on cheatsheet) was GIR at 66% but has gotten off to a fantastic start this year hitting 76% of GIR in the first three tournaments. He has played here in each of the last 3 years and has finished 43, 32nd and 8th last year. He makes a great choice in any format.
Brendon De Jonge
Draftkings - $8,700
Fantasy Feud - $123,000
He has now made 3 straight cuts after missing at the Frys.com to open the new season. He now returns to a course he has enjoyed success at over the years. He has played here all 5 times and hasn't missed the cut finishing 15th, 60, 4th, 16th, and 2nd last year. He is a very accurate driver and knows his way around this course. He makes a great play in any format.
Robert Streb
Draftkings - $8,700
Fantasy Feud - $130,000
The defending champion at the RSM Classic makes a great choice again this time around. He was ranked inside the top 30 in SG:T2G, Ball Striking, GIR, Par 4 Performance, and Putting during the 2015 season. After a missed cut at the Frys.com Open he has finished T53 at the CIMB Classic and T35 at the HSBC Champions. He is trending in the right direction again and makes a great pick in any format.
Brian Harman
Draftkings - $8,100
Fantasy Feud - $123,000
He will be a core play in cash games this week. While he wasn't ranked inside the top 45 in any stat he also wasn't ranked outside 87th in any stat(stats used on cheatsheet this week). He has played here in each of the last 3 years and finished 27th, 10th, and 41st last year. After missing the cut at the Frys.com Open he has picked up 3 straight cuts made highlighted by a T7 at the CIMB Classic.
Shawn Stefani
Draftkings - $7,000
Fantasy Feud - $116,000
While his price rose about $30,00 on Fantasy Feud, it remained the same on DraftKings this week. This after a solid 25th place finish at the OHL Classic even after a 73 on Sunday/Monday. He has been incredibly inconsistent lately but I love his chances again this week to make it 2 straight cuts made and possibly four days of solid golf leading to another top 25 finish.
