East Lake Golf Club - Atlanta, GA
Par 70, 7,307 Yards
The BMW Championship wrapped up Sunday afternoon with Jason Day winning in dominating fashion. He played all four rounds under 70 and never really had much of a push from the rest of the field. The hit just over 75% of greens in regulation and gained over a stroke on the field putting for the week. He is on a tremendous run of elite golf at the moment and was rewarded with not only another win but Jason also took over the #1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. He does, however, have one more accomplishment to take care of this week. Win the Tour Championship and claim the Fedex Cup and the $10,000,000 prize. If you plan to fade him this week, you might be the only one in the world doing so.
The Tour Championship is finally upon us and we will get to see a champion crowned this Sunday afternoon. The points have reset prior to the start of the Tour Championship and is setup so that any golfer in the top 5 in the rankings who wins this week will claim the Fedex Cup. There is a scenario, however, which will allow any of the 30 remaining golfers to win the Fedex Cup but the lower you are ranked the harder it will be. For instance, the 30th ranked golfer would need the leader(Day) to finish in the bottom two this week while winning the tournament themselves. A tall task considering how Day has been playing. When looking back, the last five Fedex Cup Champions have also won the year end Tour Championship tournament. It makes for an exciting final tournament with all the scenarios available and will be a great display of golf in the final week of the season.
East Lake Golf Club was once home to the Atlanta Athletic Club and dates all the way back to 1908. It is probably most famous for being the childhood golf course of legend Bobby Jones. The Tour Championship was first held here in 1998 and has become an annual event here since 2004 when the Fedex Cup playoffs began. The course is a 7,307 Yard, Par 70 test for the competitors. The four Par 3 holes present a test as they range between 197 and 235 yards. There are only two Par 5 holes on the course(600 yards & 525 yards). Both present an opportunity for Birdies if you can hit the fairway with some length. With 12 Par 4's on the course I will be looking at Par 4 Performance this week combined with Greens in Regulation and Proximity. Those, along with putting will key to success here at East Lake.
When forming a DFS team this week for high entry GPP, it is going to be tough to separate yourself from the field as their are only 30 golfers to choose from. This would be a good week to make multiple lineups that are very close with 1 or 2 golfers interchanged between them for variation. It would also be wise to enter multiple single entry leagues or smaller entry tournaments to try and not encounter so much overlap. I will be breaking down the top 5 golfers and their chances of winning and claiming the Fedex Cup. I will also break down 5 of my other top plays this week to help you start the lineup building process. For a look at all the scenarios for every golfer click HERE.
Jason Day
Vegas Odds - 4/1
Draftkings - $12,500
StarsDarft - $11,600
GoDraft - $32,250
Fedex Cup Standings - 1st
He picked up another win and this time in pretty dominating fashion. He moved into the #1 spot in the official World Golf Rankings with the win and can cap off this tremendous run this week by taking down the Fedex Cup and the 10 million dollar prize. It would be hard to bet against him at this point no matter the price you have to pay. Since missing back to back cuts at the PLAYERS and Memorial, Day has gone T9(US Open), T4(Open Champ), WIN(Canadian Open), T12(WGC Bridgestone), WIN(PGA Champ), WIN(Barclays), T12(Deutsche Bank), WIN(BMW Champ). He has played the Tour Championship in four of the last five years and hasn't finished outside of 17th and finished 4th last year. With the momentum he is carrying and the form he is in, he will be tough to beat this week.
Jordan Spieth
Vegas Odds - 9/1
Draftkings - $11,000
StarsDarft - $10,400
GoDraft - $29,100
Fedex Cup Standings - 2nd
After missing the first two cuts in the playoffs he finished with a 13th place finish in last weeks BMW Championship. He came into the playoffs with a huge lead and was able to stay in 2nd heading to the Tour Championship. He might be one of the lower owned golfers in the top 5 this week due to his two missed cuts. Never count out Spieth who will have a lot to play for other than the Fedex Cup championship. He will also be looking to take back 1st in the World Golf Rankings and a possible Player of the Year award. In some eyes, the player of the year has already been won by Day but I believe it will come down to this Sunday and it would make an incredible finish to the season if they were in the final group together. Spieth finished 27th here last year and runner up back in 2013.
Rickie Fowler
Vegas Odds - 12/1
Draftkings - $10,300
StarsDarft - $8,700
GoDraft - $26,200
Fedex Cup Standings - 3rd
After missing the cut at the Barclays, Fowler has been playing at the top of his game again. He finished 4th last week after winning the Deutsche Bank the week before. Sitting inside the top 5 in standings going into this weeks Tour Championship means he can win the Fedex Cup with a win at East Lake. He finished 8th here last year. His price on StarsDraft is much lower than on DraftKings and presents great value. Look for a strong finish to close out the season for Fowler this week.
Henrik Stenson
Vegas Odds - 11/1
Draftkings - $10,500
StarsDarft - $8,400
GoDraft - $27,400
Fedex Cup Standings - 4th
He won the Tour Championship and the Fedex Cup back in 2013 and is in good position to do it all over again this year. He comes in with great form finishing 10th last week and back to back runner ups to start the playoffs. He is another golfer under priced over at StarsDraft when comparing him to the other top end golfers this week. He is 2nd on tour this year in strokes gained tee to green and is an elite ball striker. Look for Stenson to be in contention come Sunday afternoon.
Bubba Watson
Vegas Odds - 21/1
Draftkings - $8,700
StarsDarft - $8,500
GoDraft - $22,900
Fedex Cup Standings - 5th
He is the only golfer in the top 5 in the standings who comes in under $10K on DraftKings. Bubba has put together a pretty good playoffs so far with a 10th last week, 29th at the Deutsche Bank, and 3rd at the opening Barclays tournament. He ranks 1st on tour in Strokes Gained Tee to Green and 2nd in Driving Distance. He hits a ton of greens and his putter has been a bright spot this year. He is a very creative player and will be looking to make another huge splash on tour with a Fedex Cup win. He finished 14th here last year, 5th in 2012, 23rd in 2011, and 17th back in 2010. He makes a great GPP play at his price and the fact he can be first or last with his style of play.
Rory McIlroy
Vegas Odds - 7.5/1
Draftkings - $11,700
StarsDarft - $10,100
GoDraft - $30,200
Fedex Cup Standings - 11th
He skipped the Barclays to open the playoffs, then finished 29th at the Deutsche Bank followed by a T4 at the BMW Championship last weekend. The former #1 player in the World Golf Rankings will be looking to climb to the top of the mountain again this week. He will need some help however to win the Fedex Cup as he is outside the top 5 in the standings. He will need to start by winning the Tour Championship. He finished 2nd here last year and 10th back in 2012 so he is familiar with the course and not to mention he is an elite player and can win anywhere at anytime.
***Stats are not registered as official as he hasn't played the required # of rounds***
Hideki Matsuyama
Vegas Odds - 29/1
Draftkings - $8,000
StarsDarft - $6,500
GoDraft - $18,200
FedexCup Standings - 15th
Comes in at a nice value across the industry but especially on StarsDraft at $6,500 this week. He ranks elite in almost all statistical categories this year and has been so close to putting it all together for a win. It has been his putter, for the most part, letting him down this year in the big moments. He finished 7th last week at the BMW , 25th at the Deutsche Bank, and 13th in the opening playoff tournament, The Barclays. At these prices I can't get away from a player of his caliber who is so close to another PGA tour win.
Patrick Reed
Vegas Odds - 41/1
Draftkings - $7,600
StarsDarft - $5,900
GoDraft - $15,100
Fedex Cup Standings - 10th
He has been up and down throughout the playoffs placing 28th last week, 4th at the Deutsche Bank, and 62nd at the Barclays. He finished 19th here last year and should be able to improve on that this time around. He is an elite putter and great on the par 4's but is very up and down with is accuracy. If he can hit some fairways this week it should help his GIR and PROX game and give him a shot at another win in 2015.
Harris English
Vegas Odds - 81/1
Draftkings - $7,000
StarsDarft - $5,000
GoDraft - $12,800
Fedex Cup Standings - 30th
He sits in 30th in the standings and has been trending nicely throughout the playoffs. After an opening 30 at the Barclays he finished 12th at the Deutsche Bank and 19th last weekend at the BMW Championship. He hits a long drive and is 51st in GIR in 2015 combined with a a 29th rank in Par 4 Performance and 15th in Strokes Gained Putting. I like his chances this week for a strong finish to the season to payoff his low salary across the industry.
Robert Streb
Vegas Odds - 67/1
Draftkings - $7,300
StarsDarft - $5,600
GoDraft - $14,200
FedexCup Standings - 14th
It has been a tremendous season for Streb and a good year for those who used him in daily fantasy. He was a staple for most of the year in cash games and paid off a high percentage of the time. He only missed 6 cuts to go with a win, a runner up and 9 top 10 finishes. He will be looking to cap off the year in style with a solid finish at East Lake. He is ranked 24th in SG:T2G, 38th in Driving Distance, 17th in GIR, 14th in Par 4 Performance and 27th in SG:Putting. That will be a nice recipe for success for his first trip to the Tour Championship.
