Daily Fantasy College Football Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings - Saturday Late 9/19/15

Ooh, we just love how the college football slates seem to go all weekend. What better way to pass the time waiting for NFL Sunday to start? This Saturday late slate has a bunch of fun games on it with high projected totals. Should be a scoring fest.

Quarterback

Jerrod Heard
Last week Heard got the nod over the struggling Tyrone Swoops and led Texas to a much needed victory. The win came against Rice who isn't exactly a world beater, but hey, a win is a win. After getting embarrassed by Notre Dame Week 1, Charlie Strong needed this win and it seems unlikely he will get away from the guy who delivered the W. There are a couple concerns with Heard. One, he's far from a polished passer as evidenced by only 7 pass attempts last week. As a freshman he doesn’t have the experience and may have some ups and downs along the way. It's also possible he doesn’t have a firm grip on the starters gig, but I think he's there to stay. The good with Heard is he brings real athletic ability and a spark to this Longhorn offense. They also play host to California who has been known to score some points. In order for Texas to hang with Cal's offense Heard will have to move the chains by making plays with his feet. I'm more than happy hitching my wagon to a middling priced guy who could eclipse 100 yards rushing and is a threat to punch one in from six.

Patrick Mahomes
Texas Tech quarterbacks never seem to translate to NFL talent, but they sure do tear it up on Saturdays. Mahomes is the next guy in line to put up gaudy stats week in week out in the Red Raider offense. Coached by Cliff Kingsbury, a former Texas Tech quarterback who could chuck it all over the field himself, TT has continued to focus on a spread attack passing game. Mahomes has plenty of weapons at his disposal and with his ability to go through his progressions he is a tough nut to crack. Statistically, Arkansas defends the pass quite well ranking 18th in the nation, but I think it’s a little misleading based on their opponents and I don’t see them being able to stop this offense. Based on a game total in the around 71 it looks like Vegas agrees Texas Tech will be able to move the ball. Arkansas is going to give Tech everything they handle after getting embarrassed by Toledo, but that will only mean more Mahomes. He’s going to pass, a lot.

Running Backs

Derrick Henry
I love this spot for Henry, loves it a bunch. Henry has six rushing touchdowns on just 31 carries and I already know what you're thinking. Scoring a touchdown every 5 carries is simply unsustainable so the guy is just running hot. So sort of, a score every 5 carries is not sustainable, but Henry isn't running hot. He is, however, running over, around, and through people. Bottom line, he just hasn’t needed the touches to get his and Bama has been controlling their opponents from start to finish. This week they face the Runnin Rebels from Ole Miss who have put up 70+ in both their contests on the year. Going out on a limb here, but I don’t think Ole Miss will drop 70 on the Tide. Anything can happen, but I fully expect Henry to see almost as many carries in this game as he has all year. At 6'3" 240lbs the only Runnin Rebel in this game will be my man pots an d pans Derrick Henry. Lock it up.

Jordan Canzeri
As of this writing there is zero indication LeShun Daniels Jr. is going to be able to give it go due to an injury. This opens the door for Canzeri, who has been pretty darn efficient in limited action, to finally see a starts workload. Iowa generally deploys a conservative offense with a commitment to the run. Last week Canzeri replaced Daniels Jr. and didn’t disappoint with 124 yards and a touch on 24 carries. He also had over 100 total yards (90 receiving) and a score in week 1 so even as a backup Canzeri was fantasy relevant. After Canzeri, Iowa is very inexperienced at the running back position so as a starter he could see 30 touches and given his performance he certainly has the trust of the coaching staff. This play obviously hinges on Daniels Jr. being out, but all signs point to a Canzeri start.

Wide Receivers

Going to go a couple of blanket statements here. But you'll see why.

Texas Tech Wide Receivers
When you run an offense like the Air Raid you are going to have some wide receivers who will see some bigger volume. This season Texas Tech has actually passed a little less than 2014 (58% of the time down from 62%) part of that stems from having blown out UTEP in Week 2. The Red Raiders took their foot off the gas in the second half, slowed things down and got an easy win. But when you look back to Week 1 against Sam Houston State you see they threw almost 60 times in a high scoring affair. This week they'll face a good Arkansas D, but some contextual pieces has us thinking the WRs hit value. Jakeem Grant and Devon Lauderdale are the highest targeted wide outs in the system at 8 and 10 looks per game respectively. Both are bargains on FanDuel and Lauderdale is an especially good value on DraftKings. With the over at 70 (already 6 points higher than the open) and Tech coming in at a manageable, but non-blowout +10, we are all over the speedsters in this game.

Washington State Wide Receivers
Much the same line of thinking as the guys above. Washington State throws the ball an ungodly 80% of the time and they are non-apologetic about their game plan. I was going to say they go to the air early and often, but even that's an understatement. Wazzu throws 14% more than the third team in the NCAA. That's a crazy gap and it should be more of the same. The biggest beneficiary this season is Gabe Marks who ranks second in the NCAA in targets per game so far on the young season. He's getting back to elite status and makes a fantastic play, especially on FanDuel where we'd almost call him a must start. River Cracraft and Dom Williams round out the majority of the targets and they see quite a few as well. Washington State is a -24 favorite in in a game where Vegas has them right around 43 points. That most of that should come from this group and you have really solid value.

Tight Ends

Hunter Henry
If you want to spend up at Tight End or simply have a few bucks left over Henry is the top end guy I would target. Keon Hatcher is out so Henry could easily emerge as the Hogs best weapon in the passing game.
Chad Olsen
If you want to go cheap Olsen is the guy to target. He’s simply the best option near the bottom of the salary barrel.
