Whistling Straits(Straits Course) - Sheboygan, WI
Par 72 - 7,501 Yards
The final major championship is upon us. The players head to Wisconsin this weekend to one of the toughest tests in golf. Whistling Straits will be the host of the 2015 PGA Championship. The course has hosted the Championship most recently in 2010 (Martin Kaymer - Winner) and 2004 (Vijay Singh - Winner). It was in 2010 where Dustin Johnson grounded his club in an unmarked bunker and was issued a 2 stroke penalty, which ultimately left him short of the playoff. It is a links-style course with over 1200 bunkers and is very open to the elements. When the wind speed rises it can play very tough and pars can be hard to get. Believe me, I know. I played this course last night on PS4 Rory Golf and barely shot a 70 (LOL). Ok, joking aside, the first thing I noticed when playing the course was if you do not hit the fairway consistently you will put yourself in some bad recovery situations. The greens are guarded with bunkers and the pins can be tucked in some tight areas. The difference in this tournament can sometimes come down to playing it safe and taking a par versus being aggressive and trying to attack pins. Players will need to find that balance or a high number will be posted on the scorecard.
With most major championships the cream rises to the top so you will want to play mostly a balanced lineup for the GPP play this weekend no matter the site you are playing on. When it comes to the DraftKings Millionaire Maker tournament you will definitely want to find one or two guys who you project to be low owned. It usually takes all of your golfers in the top 25 along with the winner and one or two others in the top 10 to take home the big prize. If you are multi entering it is good to pick a core four or five guys and build your lineups around them rather than try and cover the whole field. Again, if you are multi entering it isn't a bad idea to throw one stars and scrubs lineup in as well as there is plenty of value below $7500 this week.
When looking at the stats to fit this course it is a tough one to peg one type of golfer who will do well and that is how majors should be. If you are a long hitter you will want to be accurate as well or at least an above average scrambler. If you are an accuracy player you better have good proximity along with a good greens in regulation. No matter what type of player you are you better be able to putt well from all distances. Avoiding the big number on this course will go a long way to be near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. Below are all the stats I am using on my cheatsheet this week:
Jordan Spieth
Vegas Odds - 6.5/1
Draftkings - $12,500
Victiv - $11,400
Fantasy Feud - $193,000
If you are paying up for any golfer this week doesn't have to be Spieth? I mean he has won two majors and finished top 5 in the other so far this year. He wants to get to #1 in the world and no better way to get there than to score a win at the final major. He is average in driving distance, driving accuracy, and GIR but elite in Strokes Gained Tee to Green and Putting, Proximity, and Scrambling. He is a guy who can win anywhere but seems to raise his game in these tough fields.
Adam Scott
Vegas Odds - 23/1
Draftkings - $10,200
Victiv - $8,300
Fantasy Feud - $151,000
He is a guy who always plays well in the majors and most recently the PGA Championship in particular. He has finished inside the top 15 of the PGA in four straight years. He finished 39th in 2010, the last time the PGA was held here at Whistling Straits but don't fear because in 2004 at Whistling Straits he finished in 9th place. He is elite Tee to Green and hits it a ton. He also hits lots of greens and puts it close most of the time. His only weak spots would be his scrambling and putting. If he can keep the ball out of the rough, make a few putts and avoid the big mistakes he will be there on Sunday.
Bubba Watson
Vegas Odds - 15/1
Draftkings - $9,900
Victiv - $9,800
Fantasy Feud - $179,000
In 2010, Bubba came in 2nd here at Whistling Straits and hasn't had a top 10 at the PGA Championship since. He is on a roll as of late and coming in with confidence. He is coming off back to back runner ups and won just over a month ago. He leads the tour in Strokes Gained Tee to Green and is 2nd in Driving Distance. He hits alot of greens in regulation and is a terrific scrambler and putter. He has upside to win and comes in under $10K on DraftKings and Vicitv.
Henrik Stenson
Vegas Odds - 26/1
Draftkings - $9,700
Victiv - $8,700
Fantasy Feud - $158,000
He comes into this years PGA Championship after coming 3rd the past two years. He is a top tier player and is elite in SG:T2G, Driving Distance, Driving Accuracy, GIR, and SG:Putting. He is having a terrific year for a guy without a win and hasn't missed a cut on the PGA Tour all year. The course sets up nice for his game and he will be looking to score his first top 10 in a major this year. Have him in your lineup as he soars to the top of the leaderboard.
Zach Johnson
Vegas Odds - 41/1
Draftkings - $8,400
Victiv - $8,200
Fantasy Feud - $130,000
One of the hottest golfers on tour lately will look for his 2nd major in a row after winning the British Open a month ago. He hasn't missed a cut since April at the RBC Heritage and has a win four top 10's, and seven top 20's since that missed cut. He isn't long off the tee but more than makes up for it with accuracy and ability to the greens in regulation at a high rate. He finished in 3rd here in 2010 and 37th back in 2004 here at Whistling Straits. Look for Zach to keep this run going and pay off his price tag this weekend.
Paul Casey
Vegas Odds - 71/1
Draftkings - $7,400
Victiv - $7,200
Fantasy Feud - $116,000
If you are looking for a staple in your cash games this week look no further than Paul Casey. He has made six cuts in a row on the PGA Tour and only missed three cuts all year. He is really consistent and has the stats to show you why. He is elite in Strokes Gained: Te to Green, Driving Distance, GIR, and Proximity. Those stats make a nice recipe for success here at Whistling Straits.
Brooks Koepka
Vegas Odds - 41/1
Draftkings - $7,800
Victiv - $7,700
Fantasy Feud - $130,000
He will be one of the most popular picks this week as he has been on a tear lately. He has made seven straight cuts and in that time has only one finish outside the top 20. He bombs the ball, hits a ton of greens and is an excellent putter. He makes another great addition to a cash game lineup but also has upside to contend for the win.
Jason Dufner
Vegas Odds - 101/1
Draftkings - $7,300
Victiv - $5,800
Fantasy Feud - $88,000
He has a terrific PGA Championship record in the previous five years making 4 of 5 cuts with a win, a runner up , and a 5th back in 2010 when it was last played here at Whistling Straits. He hasn't missed a cut in his last five tournaments with two top 20 finishes in that time. He isn't long off the tee but makes up for it on the approach shots. If he can hit some putts and stay out of the long stuff he should put up another good showing at a PGA Championship.
Francesco Molinari
Vegas Odds - 126/1
Draftkings - $6,800
Victiv - $6,600
Fantasy Feud - $95,000
I always seem to be writing about this guy. I do love playing cash games and he has been a terrific cash play this year. He hasn't had a finish in the PGA Championship inside the top 30 in the previous 5 years but also hasn't missed a cut. He hasn't missed a cut on the PGA Tour in 2015 since withdrawing from the Valero in February. He is #1 in Driving Accuracy, 7th in GIR and 39th in Proximity. Look for another cut made this weekend at a price tag under $7K.
Jason Bohn
Vegas Odds - 176/1
Draftkings - $6,700
Victiv - $5,800
Fantasy Feud - $39,000
His only stat not inside the top 60 ranking this week is driving distance but is 3rd in accuracy and 3rd in proximity. He is also a very good scrambler and putter. All skills that will help guide him around this tough course. He is coming in with some good form and will look for it to continue a the major this week.
