Quicken Loans National
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club - Gainsville, VA
Par 71, 7,385 Yards
The RBC Canadian Open has wrapped up and the Canadian drought continues. David Hearn held the lead going into Sunday but could only muster an even par round to finish two strokes back of winner Jason Day. Another Canadian, Adam Hadwin, shot a 66 on Sunday to finish T7 for the week. As a Canadian myself, I was thrilled to see two guys in the top 10. As for Jason Day, it was clear he quickly shook off the missed putt at the Open Championship in Scotland. He had a 21 foot putt on 18 to get to -17 and take the clubhouse lead and put it right in the middle of the cup. Going into the PGA Championship, Day will definitely be one of the favorites. Now onto this week.
The PGA Tour travels to Gainsville, Virginia this week for the Quicken Loans National at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. This will be the first time the PGA Tour has visited this course for a stroke play event. The course has hosted the Presidents Cup four times(2005,2000,1996,1994) but not many of the players in the field played those events. I have highlighted the records of those who played the 2005 event in my cheatsheet this week. As there will be no course history to look at I have provided the Quicken Loans National results for each player over the past five years. It will give us a feel for what players get up for this tournament. The course has 11 Par 4's, three Par 5's, and four Par 3's. Six of the Par 4 holes are 450+ yards with the longest stretching to 500 yards. I will be looking closely at Par 4 Performance this week as well as Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards. There will be a lot of approaches on the par 4's from that distance and combine that with the Par 3 holes that are 175,190,200,210 yards in length. As for other stats, I will be looking at Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Putting, Ball Striking, Proximity, and Scrambling. It is tough to say what stats will be the most important so a combination of all of these should point us in the right direction. Most important this week will be golfers who have good current form and come in with some momentum and confidence.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
- Ball Striking
- Proximity
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards
- Par 4 Performance
- Scrambling
- Strokes Gained: Putting
Upper Tier Targets
Justin Rose
Vegas Odds - 10.25/1
Draftkings - $12,200
Victiv - $12,000
Fantasy Feud - $186,000
He won this event twice in the last five years including last years 4 under par win at Congressional Country Club. His current form looks good as well. He hasn't missed a cut in his previous five tournies on the PGA Tour and European Tour. When analyzing his stats, he is elite in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, Ball Striking, Proximity and Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards out. He always seems to get up for this event and no reason the trend won't continue this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 26
- Ball Striking - 9
- Proximity - 48
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 9
- Par 4 Performance - 77
- Scrambling - 147
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 82
Justin Thomas
Vegas Odds - 34/1
Draftkings - $10,000
Victiv - $7,800
Fantasy Feud - $159,000
This will be his first time playing the Quicken Loans National but will be in the same boat as everyone else as the tournament has never been played on this course. He has been elite Tee to Green in his rookie year combined with a 50th rank in Ball Striking, 35th in Birdie or Better % from 175-200 yards, and is a terrific scrambler. He has been on the verge of breaking out with his first PGA tour win all season and no better week than this with a smaller field with minimal top competition. He is a great value on Victiv this week with a depressed $7,800 price tag.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 22
- Ball Striking - 50
- Proximity - 78
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 35
- Par 4 Performance - 97
- Scrambling - 44
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 110
Shawn Stefani
Vegas Odds - 58/1
Draftkings - $8,800
Victiv - $7,500
Fantasy Feud - $130,000
I have been on Stefani all season because of his consistent play. He has made a great cash game play almost every week he enters a tournament. He has only missed three cuts all year on the PGA Tour. He finished runner up at this event last year at Congressional and 34th the year before. He should be primed to grab at least a top 20 finish this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 48
- Ball Striking - 18
- Proximity - 88
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 55
- Par 4 Performance - 23
- Scrambling - 129
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 51
Russell knox
Vegas Odds - 58/1
Draftkings - $8,500
Victiv - $7,600
Fantasy Feud - $123,000
He has been great or bad lately missing two cuts in his previous five tournies but also has two top 10's and a top 20 in the other three events. He makes a great GPP play this week and has the stats to back his price tag. He is elite in SG:T2G, Ball Striking, Proximity, Par 4 Performance, and Scrambling. This is a good recipe for most courses on tour. He did finish in 24th at this event last year as well.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 23
- Ball Striking - 26
- Proximity - 4
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 77
- Par 4 Performance - 5
- Scrambling - 51
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 109
Middle Tier Targets
Harris English
Vegas Odds - 58/1
Draftkings - $8,300
Victiv - $7,600
Fantasy Feud - $123,000
Another golfer I will be using in cash games this week. He has made seven straight cuts on Tour and has been very consistent the entire season. He has, however, only three top 10 finishes and this is why I am only using him in cash games. The upside for the win just isn't there right now. He is an elite Ball Striker and ranked 6th for Birdie or Better % from 175-200 yards. He also kills par 4's and is an elite Scrambler and Putter.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 65
- Ball Striking - 39
- Proximity - 63
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 6
- Par 4 Performance - 53
- Scrambling - 53
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 22
Jason Bohn
Vegas Odds - 58/1
Draftkings - $8,100
Victiv - $7,300
Fantasy Feud - $130,000
Here I am sitting in my computer chair with a Jason Bohner again. Seriously, look at his stat line. He is top 3 ranked in Proximity and Par 4 Performance and is top 50 in the other 4 stats as well. He is coming into this event with back to back top 15 finishes and has made the cut at this event in the last two years. He may be my favorite play for the money this week and will be a staple in my core groups of golfers.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 39
- Ball Striking - 42
- Proximity - 2
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 43
- Par 4 Performance - 3
- Scrambling - 34
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 49
Andres Romero
Vegas Odds - 74/1
Draftkings - $7,700
Victiv - $5,800
Fantasy Feud - $102,000
This pick is based off event history and current form. Andres has not missed a cut at this event in the previous five years with a 5th last year and 13th the year before. His current form is pretty good as well with two top 10's and a top 15 finish in his previous five tournaments. His stats are not there this season but seems to play well at this event even though this will be the first time playing Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. I will reserve Romero to GPP play this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 174
- Ball Striking - 174
- Proximity - 190
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 74
- Par 4 Performance - 188
- Scrambling - 145
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 93
Bryce Molder
Vegas Odds - 92/1
Draftkings - $6,900
Victiv - $5,900
Fantasy Feud - $88,000
He has made four cuts in his previous five tournaments with a 6th place finish in their as well. He has also played this event in each of the past five years and missed only one cut. He is ranked top 60 in Proximity and top 20 in Par 4 Performance, Scrambling and Putting. He will make a nice addition to a Stars & Scrubs GPP lineup this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 128
- Ball Striking - 124
- Proximity - 59
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 86
- Par 4 Performance - 18
- Scrambling - 19
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 16
Low End Targets
Ricky Barnes
Vegas Odds - 145/1
Draftkings - $6,100
Victiv - $5,100
Fantasy Feud - $53,000
He is extremely low priced on all three sites this week and makes a great play for GPP's this week. He is coming off a 11th and a 3rd place finish the past two weeks and has played this event in each of the past five years and hasn't missed a cut with two top 16 finishes as well. Grab the confident Barnes and his value this week and get him in your lineups.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 167
- Ball Striking - 195
- Proximity - 151
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 155
- Par 4 Performance - 182
- Scrambling - 80
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 73
Hudson Swafford
Vegas Odds - 170/1
Draftkings - $5,900
Victiv - $5,400
Fantasy Feud - $60,000
A second punt play this week. With a reduced field it makes for a higher % of the golfers making the cut which is perfect for Stars & Scrubs lineups. Swafford fits in nicely at his reduced price and great stat line. He is top ranked in Ball Striking, Proximity, Birdie or Better % from 175-200 yards and is a great putter. At his price a made cut would do but I feel he has the upside to grab a top 20 finish or better.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 117
- Ball Striking - 18
- Proximity - 7
- Birdie or Better % from 175-200 Yards - 33
- Par 4 Performance - 85
- Scrambling - 151
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 34
