The Old White TPC - White Sulphur Spring, WV
Par 70, 7287 Yards
Bubba Watson took home the trophy at the Travelers Championship last weekend in a playoff. He beat Paul Casey who lost his second playoff this year. Brian Harman and Graham Delaet, who were in the final group on Sunday both shot one under to finish 3rd and 4th. Luke Donald, Brian Harman, Graham Delaet, and Carl Petterson punched their tickets into the Open Championship in July by being one of the top four players finishing in the top 12 last week. This week presents another opportunity for four players to play their way into the Open. Lets get in to the tournament this week.
The Greenbrier Classic is hosted by The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The course has hosted this tournament for the 5 years it has been in existence. The fairways are generous and usually average around the 70% mark. Seeing as most of the players will be hitting the greens in two shots I will also be looking at Proximity ranking. As always on Par 70 courses Par 4 Scoring Average will be important as well. The Par 3's on this course range from 175 yards up to 234 yards presenting a tough test so we will be looking for players who rank highly in Par 3 Scoring average. More than most weeks putting will be at a premium with the undulating greens. This tournament has seen scores range from -10 to -21 in its five year existence so if the weather cooperates this week look for plenty of scoring opportunities.
Bubba Watson
Vegas Odds - 11/1
Draftkings - $13,000
Victiv - $12,000
Fantasy Aces - $7,200
Bubba comes into the Greenbrier Classic as the favorite after picking up another win last week at the Travelers Championship. He has played this course twice and finished 16th and 30th. He has two Top 5 finishes in his last 5 starts but has also missed a cut so I will be using him in GPP only this week.
Webb Simpson
Vegas Odds - 23/1
Draftkings - $11,800
Victiv - $9,100
Fantasy Aces - $6,550
Webb comes back to the Greenbrier Classic as the ultimate horse for the course as he has made the cut in 3 of his 5 appearances with 3 Top 10 finishes. He is in decent form making 4 of his last 5 cuts. Webb is ranked near the bottom in Putting but if he can use his high ranking Proximity to his advantage this week he won't be forced to make long putts. He is a good value, especially on Victiv. Look for another Top 10 this week.
Graham Delaet
Vegas Odds - 26/1
Draftkings - $10,600
Victiv - $8,300
Fantasy Aces - $5,800
I am going to stick with Delaet this week after he came so close last at the Travelers to securing his first win. He couldn't finish off the weekend as strong as the 3 days prior but still finished in 4th place. When looking for a golfer who is on a heater, look no further than the Canadian. He hasn't missed a cut in almost 2 months. He is elite when looking at GIR, Proximity and Par 3 Scoring Average so I feel comfortable rolling him out in cash games, especially on Victiv this week.
Bill Haas
Vegas Odds - 29/1
Draftkings - $10,500
Victiv - $9,400
Fantasy Aces - $5,950
Another horse for the course, Haas has made the cut here in all 4 attempts with a Top 10 finishes. He missed the cut in his most recent tournament but has 2 Top 20 finishes in his last 5 tournaments. He has been below average in Par 3 Scoring Average and Putting this year but that can change quickly at a course where he's had success.
Brendon Todd
Vegas Odds - 41/1
Draftkings - $8,500
Victiv - $8,500
Fantasy Aces - $5,650
Todd comes into this one alternating Top 20 finishes and missed cuts the past four weeks. He is a tremendous putter who hits a lot of greens and ranks highly in proximity. He finished 4th here last year and 46th in 2012. At his price he makes a nice play in a cash game format.
Kevin Chappell
Vegas Odds - 46/1
Draftkings - $8,100
Victiv - $7,200
Fantasy Aces - $5,200
Another solid cash play this week, Chappell hasn't missed a cut in his last 5 tournaments. He comes back to the Greenbrier Classic making his last 3 cuts with two Top 20 finishes. Chappell is around average ranked in most stat categories but is elite in Proximity which should help a lot this week.
Jason Bohn
Vegas Odds - 67/1
Draftkings - $7,400
Victiv - $7,400
Fantasy Aces - $4,400
Bohn is the second ranked golfer on my cheatsheet this week when looking at average ranking of all 6 stats(31.3). He has made 4 of his last 5 cuts this year. He finished 11th here last year after missing his first two cuts at Old White TPC. Bohn will be a staple in my cash games with the value he presents at his price.
Jon Curran
Vegas Odds - 81/1
Draftkings - $6,800
Victiv - $6,700
Fantasy Aces - $4,300
Curran is making his first trip to the Greenbier Classic and is coming in with some good form. He has made his last five cuts on tour with two Top 10 finishes. He is Top 60 ranked in Proximity, Par 3 and Par 4 Scoring Average, three stats I am heavily weighing this week. He makes an affordable addition to a cash game or GPP lineup.
Colt Knost
Vegas Odds - 101/1
Draftkings - $6,800
Victiv - $6,400
Fantasy Aces - $4,000
Knost comes into this week making 4 of his last 5 cuts including 3 Top 10 finishes. He is Top 10 ranked in Proximity and Par 3 Scoring Average. He is Top 50 ranked in GIR, Par 4 Scoring, and Putting as well. His only knock this week is his 0/3 at the Greenbrier. I will take the recent form, stats, and under $7000 salary and hope he makes his first cut here this week.
Scott Stallings
Vegas Odds - 126/1
Draftkings - $6,600
Victiv - $6,900
Fantasy Aces - $3,750
Close your eyes if you are glazing over his stats as he is not inside the Top 100 in any of the 6 categories this week. Why pick him then? He has played here 4 times in the past and has never missed a cut. Oh ya and he won in his first try back in 2011. He seems to be comfortable here and no better place to break out of slump. At his price, all you are really looking for is a made cut but he also offers the upside of winning this tournament.
