Game Preview:
There’s no better cure for a bad case of the Monday’s than an early afternoon bowl game. Plan your half days now because football starts at 2pm when BYU takes on Memphis in the Miami Beach Bowl. This game would have been much more fun to watch had Tayson Hill not been lost for the season. BYU lost four straight before finishing the year with four consecutive wins. Christian Stewart has filled in nicely for Hill, but he is not the same kind of playmaker/rushing threat. BYU also lost Jamaal Williams at running back. Nevertheless the Cougars are a tough team and especially upfront on defensive side of the ball, as they rank 14th against the run. Memphis, on the other hand, will look to exploit the Cougars 104th ranked passing defense and they are certainly capable. The Tigers are led by sophomore quarterback, Paxton Lynch. Lynch had a strong year for the Tigers leading them to a 9-3 record (7-1 AAC). The Tigers play good team football and are very balanced. They run a balanced offense and rank 52 overall, which goes along with their 21st ranked defense. The Tigers are little underrated and I think they are going to give BYU everything it can handle.
Players to Watch:
(BYU) Christian Stewart, Paul Lasike, Jordan Leslie, Mitch Mathews
(Mem) Paxton Lynch, Brandon Hayes
Fantasy Analysis:
Paxton Lynch is truly the catalyst of the Tiger offense and he should be able to finish strong against a very suspect pass defense. I don’t like the tag on Hayes facing such a strong run defense and will likely look elsewhere in cash games. As much as I like Lynch to have a strong game it doesn’t translate to his receivers also having a strong game. Memphis spreads the ball around and subs a lot of guys in, which makes most of them useless in the DFS world. Things get a bit cloudy when considering the BYU players. While the four guys mentioned above dominate the touches they all have clunker ability. Lasike is probably your “safest” option given his role in the offense. They can all be considered for GPP and borderline cash games.
Game Preview:
And with Tuesday comes the MAC attack or what used to be a MAC rivalry between Marshall and Northern Illinois. The problem with being in a non-power conference is one slip and you find yourself in the Boca Raton Bowl. Marshall did exactly that, slipped once and at the most inopportune time in the regular season finale. Rakeem Cato leads an explosive Marshall offense that has put points on the board all year. Linebacker convert, Devon Johnson, was having a monster season at tailback before leaving the WKU game with an injury. As great as Johnson is, the Herd still offers quite a few talented playmakers to watch. Northern Illinois was supposed to take a step back now that they have entered LAJL (Life after Jordan Lynch), but here they are; MAC Champion and playing on a Bowl game. The Huskies are still a run first team with Hare under center and Stingily in the backfield, but Da’Ron Brown on the outside cannot be forgotten. This should be a fun one.
Players to Watch:
(MAR) Rakeem Cato, Devon Johnson/Steward Butler, Tommy Shuler, Devonte Allen, Eric Frohnapfel
(NIU) Drew Hare, Cameron Stingily, Da’Ron Brown
Fantasy Analysis:
Don’t let the WKU game fool you; Marshall has a strong defense so NIU will have to earn it. Stingily has a nose for the end zone and he gets the rock when they need to put it in for six. Hare is always a threat to break some runs, but unless he is cheaper than expected I’m likely looking elsewhere for cash games. Marshall is a buffet of DFS options. If I’m naming a TE you know the offense is sick. All Marshall platers can be used and Butler becomes very intriguing if DJ can’t go or is limited like he was in the C-USA Championship against La Tech.
Game Preview:
On the back end of our Tuesday double-header we have our second Independent School, Navy and the Aztecs of San Diego State, another Mountain West school. I’m not sure I still get the whole Independent thing in the land of Power Conferences, but good for them, I guess. If you like hard-nosed ram it down your throat football then this is the game for you. Oh, and it’s the Poinsettia Bowl, nothing says football like a poisonous plant from Mexico. Navy brings its staple triple option to the game led by NCAA record holder, Keenan Reynolds. Reynolds has had a superb season leading the Midshipman to a 7-5 record and breaking the all-time rushing touchdown record for a quarterback (61). Navy is better than their 7-5 record given their relatively tough schedule and played some good schools down to the wire (Ohio St being one of them). On the other side of the field SDST will deploy their superstar in the making, Donnell Pumphrey. Pump Master Flex has been a one man wrecking crew for the Aztecs and Navy is going to have its hands full trying to contain him. The issue for the Aztecs is after Pumphrey the talent falls off a cliff. If they can’t get him going Navy should cruise to victory.
Players to Watch:
(Navy) Keenan Reynolds
(SDST) Donnell Pumphrey
Fantasy Analysis:
One thing very predictable in this game is SDST will feed Pump Master all he can handle. His price tag is high and for that reason I may opt away from Pumphrey, but it will only be because I’m choosing to allocate dollars to other positions, like QB. Even at such high prices Pumphrey stands to pay this price as he’s more than capable of 200+ yards and multiple touchdown games. Navy ranks towards the bottom in rush defense at 94th. Reynolds is the only other player to be considered in this game (for cash game purposes). His rushing prowess offer a reasonably high floor at the quarterback position.
