Weekly disclaimer:
Want our week 16 picks? Go check them out. The whole concept of a sleeper in one week fantasy football games needs to be adjusted. First of all, there's no real such thing as a "sleeper," in that you're not really going to sleep on a guy until he wakes up. What you're looking at with cheap plays are guys who are priced very reasonably who could go off if all things break right. Sniffing out the best cheap plays with upside is really the only way to have a chance in hell at taking down some of these utterly massive NFL tournaments. You'll pay up for the big names, and then hope your bargain plays pay off. That's where we come in - here are some sleepers that we love for Week 16.
Jonathan Stewart - FD 6200 DK 5200 DD 9100 DFSTR
Stewart has topped 20 touches in each of his last two games, putting up a legitimately excellent fantasy night against the Saints two weeks ago. And now? He gets his best match-up of the season: Cleveland's 31st ranked run defense, and their offense that couldn't score if its life depended on it. If offenses had a life. I was going to say "couldn't score on prom night," but that sounded too stupid. Sue me. Where was I? Right. I think the Panthers will be content to drive it down Cleveland's throat, especially after the way the Bengals' run game tore them to shreds last week. Love this spot.
Fred Jackson - FD 6700 DK 5500 DD 9450 DFSTR
Jackson is back, and he's clearly the man in Buffalo. He competently salted away a big win against the Packers, accumulating nearly 100 total yards on 23 touches. And now he'll square off against the pitiful Raiders. I just can't imagine for a second that the Raiders will score a single point, which should lead to plenty of opportunities for Jackson, including a likely end to his scoring drought.
Joseph Randle - FD 4900 DK 3000 DD 8100 DFSTR
Lance Dunbar - FD 4500 DK 3000 DD 6500 DFSTR 3000
Keep an eye on the news on this situation as the week develops. Some sources have had Randle penciled in since the beginning of the season, but others think Dunbar profiles more as an every down back. If I had to gamble I'd go with Dunbar at this point, but follow twitter or Rotoworld carefully to get your updates closer to game time. At sub $5k prices, whoever starts will be a must start in the most match-up proof of ways. OLs mean more to running games in most cases than the backs themselves, and either of these guys could crush it.
Doug Martin - FD 5500 DK 3700 DD 8000 DFSTR
Well, here's a name I never thought I'd write in a fantasy column again. Doug Martin, ladies and gentlemen! Not a whole heck of a lot to see here in all likelihood. This is a deep, deep sleeper. But Martin sure looks the part of the feature back in Tampa at the moment, and Green Bay has sported a bottom 7 rush defense in terms of both total yardage and yards per carry. Now, I suspect that the Bucs will just get blown to smithereens. But Martin wouldn't have to do much to justify these prices.
Alfonso Smith - FD 4500 DK 3500 DD 4500 DFSTR 3000
With Gore gone with a concussion and Carlos Hyde tweaking just about everything, Smith is the only reasonable ball carrier currently on the roster. If Hyde winds up missing the game as well, Smith (or whatever player the Niners sign off of the scrap heap, I guess) becomes a very intriguing play. Again, it's simply a price thing. The Niners have struggled to run the ball effectively this year. But teams who struggle to run the ball effectively have RBs that cost $6,200, not $4,500.
Pierre Garcon - FD 5700 DK 4400 DD 5700 DFSTR
Garcon has gotten utterly lost in the QB shuffle in Washington this year. It seems like a zillion years ago that he led the NFL in targets, but that was actually last year. 2013. Can you believe that? You know who threw him the ball, then? One Robert Griffin, Esquire. Can you imagine stranger things than them getting together on 6-10 receptions as Griffin rediscovers his sea legs against the league's 7th worst passing defense? Me, too.
Robert Griffin III - FD 6900 DK 6100 DD 6900 DFSTR
Same as the writeup for Garcon, above. Griffin showed flashes last week, and was a couple flukes away from putting up a monster game. He's a freakish athlete with a ton to prove, in a position in life that he's never faced before. It's sort of a "nothing left to lose" thing. He might just leave it on the table here and leave the Redskins with some tough off-season decisions.
Donte Moncrief - FD 5900 DK 4100 DD 8100 DFSTR
Hakeem Nicks - FD 5100 DK 3400 DD 5300 DFSTR
Totally dependent on Hilton's injury status. We've seen Moncrief's usage skyrocket when the deck gets shuffled earlier this season, and he's still priced like an absolute bum. I prefer Moncrief here simply due to Indy's clear preference for him (he's outsnapped Nicks week after week), but Nicks seems to be the preferred end-zone target. Either is a viable separation-style sleeper for week 16.
Mychal Rivera - FD 5500 DK 4000 DD 6700 DFSTR
I'm a fan of paying up for tight ends this week, but Rivera is firmly back in the fold, drawing 27 targets over the last three weeks. The issue here is obviously how god-freaking-awful the Raiders are on offense, but I think this is a sneaky great week to buy into Rivera. Buffalo has the best pass rush in the game, and Carr will have a lot less time than usual to get rid of the ball. This should mean a lot of short stuff - the area where Rivera thrives.
