Drew Brees
We picked him last week in this format even though he was coming off just a dreadful week the time before against the Bengals. Brees responded by throwing for three touchdowns and 375 yards against the Bears on Monday night. It was a bounceback for sure. And I think he’s a favorite for multiple touchdowns this week against a Falcon defense that really shouldn’t even be called as such. The Falcons are, by almost any metric, dead last in the league in defending the pass. The only place they haven’t gotten killed, funny enough, is in passing touchdowns. But I suspect that’s a little bit of luck more than anything in that teams have just been able to run the ball in as easily (they are last in the league in that number as well). So yes, I think Brees will be able to throw early, often and often some more. According to our system, he is by far the highest touchdown expectation of the week.
Andrew Luck
He’s coming off a couple of lower performances (by his own lofty standards) in a row the last two weeks against the Browns and Texans. Granted in the Browns game he threw a whopping 53 passes and yet was still held to 294/2. The Cowboys are in the bottom third of the league in average passing yards per attempt and passing yards per game. Because Dallas will be without Murray I think they will have a little more trouble controlling the time of possession, allowing for Luck enough opportunity for the Colts to do what they do: throw and throw and throw some more.
Le’Veon Bell
He was our top pick for all-purpose yards last week against the Falcons. There are two takeaways from the performance. On the surface it didn’t totally work out in that he “only” totaled 119 yards. And yet, though Atlanta held him to less than 2.5 yards per carry, he still hit that number. I actually find that encouraging in that the Steelers just use the guy so much that even when it isn’t totally clicking, dude still racks it up. The Chiefs have had their issues controlling the run this season. They allow the highest average yards per attempt in the league and the only reason they aren’t dead last in the league in total rushing yards allowed is they control the ball enough on the offensive side so as to not allow the opposing team enough opportunity. But I’m still leaning on Bell this week. Dude just gets too much run.
Jonathan Stewart
Screw it. I’m going to go just a little off board for this one. Stewart isn’t sexy by any means. But he saw over twenty carries last week and turned it into about eighty total yards. The week before with Cam in the lineup it was 155 total yards on the ground. The Panthers are happy feeding him the ball. Of course, I don’t love that he doesn’t have much of a role in the passing game, but he’s trickled in just enough there that think asking him to get over 100 total yards isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility. And if you are looking for separation, there won’t be many other folks running him out there this week.
Odell Beckham Jr.
As a Giants’ fan I couldn’t be any more excited about this guy. He’s a superstar plain and simple. And as a fan of Big Blue I know something about Eli Manning. When he picks his guy, there is no disguising the love. He’ll chuck it up there come hell or highwater because Eli’s simple like that. Keep it easy to the point of foolishness, but we are at a point of the season with the Giants that really what do they have to lose by just throwing it to ODBJ and seeing what happens. Actually, we’ve seen what happens. He runs wide open (unbelievable) for long stretches in the game. And even when he is covered he makes the greatest catch of all time. The most targeted guy over the last couple of weeks and it should continue.
Julian Edelman
The biggest problem, typically, with the Patriots is that when you think they are going to zig, they f#$%ing zag and it drives you (and opposing defenses) insane. But one stable thing in their offense has been how Brady uses Edelman. He’s seen double digit targets in half of his games this season, and a few more he just missed by one. He won’t rack up the yards, but that doesn’t much matter for us in the ScoreStreak format. We just want the quarterback love. And Brady has it for Julian. He’s questionable for this week, but I think he plays.
