Last week I advocated a safer strategy in terms of hitting some of these marks, especially if you were playing in a heads up match. In those you are going to want to take safe routes with some of the bigger names and slot them in for guaranteed points. This week I'll take a look at a couple of home run types who can help you win that Tesla.
On a short week there are actually a fair amount of decent options here at quarterback. I think there are a couple of guys I can talk myself into, especially on the high end. Of course you are going to get the Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning's of the world in these lineups. And I think they make sense from a safety point of view. But we are looking a little upside here.
Jay Cutler
One important concept to understand in these scenarios, especially in a format like ScoreStreak is that we want to give ourselves a chance to hit the top end and have it be with a guy other people weren't on. This separation is invaluable. Cutler is a guy who could offer a chance to hit a big TD number. This is going to be a high scoring game in which the Bears are most likely playing from behind. That's key for the passing touchdowns because we want Cutler throwing until the very end. Additionally, the Bears pass the ball at the highest clip inside the twenty yard line. Once they hit the red zone, Chicago passes 72% of the time. That's an amazingly high number. If you want a quarterback to throw touchdowns he needs to throw the ball near the end zone (groundbreaking). This is a great scenario for Cutler.
Ben Roethlisberger
Feels kind of gross picking a guy coming off two weeks of throwing twelve total touchdowns. Like trying to grab the last bit of value from a stock that's reached its actual peak. And buying on this kind of past performance isn't a terrific strategy. But like Cutler above, there is a certain method to this madness. Big Ben throws for a lot of TDs because the Steelers throw a ton near the endzone. Plain and simple, it's why he's blown it out of the box recently. I don't think he'll keep it up, but the idea of him putting up numbers against the Jets is reasonable considering the schemes Pittsburgh runs close and in. It's worth noting that within the five yard line, the Steelers pass more than 60% of the time. This isn't a fluke.
Matt Forte
Not a sleeper by any means, but playing Cutler and Forte together in ScoreStreak this week offers you the kind of stack that isn't always possible in this format. Because salary is no constraint we need not worry about "fitting him" and considering how much usage Forte gets in the offense. Consider this: Forte is 8th in the league in total rushing attempts and second! in receptions. Those numbers are pretty insane. He just does everything for the Bears. The only way to hit the upper echelon in all-purpose yards is to touch the ball every time for your team. Forte does that and it doesn't even matter the score because he features so much in both attacks.
LeSean McCoy
It's been a tough year for Shady owners as he's gotten off to a rough start. A historically bad start actually. But there's reason for hope going into this week. His last few games have seen him get 153, 97 and 123 yards respectively as he chews up a few more yards on the ground. The Panthers rank 26th in the league against the run and are middle of the pack against the pass. With Sanchez behind center I think the Eagles lean more on Shady and ask him to carry the offense while the Sanch-ize gets acclimated. And considering McCoy's success last week with Marky-Mark under center I think he's in a great spot this time around.
Note: Antonio Brown is the most targeted WR in football by a country mile. Will be tough fading him at all in this format no matter how you think the game against the Jets turns out.
Julio Jones
Seems like forever ago since I've thought about him. They played the early game in London two weeks ago and then the Falcons had a bye. There are a few decent wide receivers going this week and Megatron could be making an appearance meaning I don't know if Jones is a universal start in this format. But this guy is the fifth most targeted receiver in football and that's even with him having had a bye already. He should feature in the Falcons' plans this week and if we are going to use targets as one of the primary indicators of receptions (you can't catch em if you aren't thrown em) then this is a solid spot. The game, according to Vegas, should stay close and that could keep Atlanta passing until the end.
Dez Bryant
If I wanted to get a guy in there that others are soured on, Dez could be the guy. It was rough without Romo last week, but there's no denying that Weeden wanted to get Dez the rock. He stared him down and threw to him, what seemed like, every time. Dez had ten targets but only two catches. Watching the game, some of the passes weren't close. But honestly, I'm looking for a little under-owned upside. I'd be willing to chuck him out there in the big tournaments no matter the QB situation because I want the separation.
