First, thank you for your continued interest and support. We’re going try something new this Thursday. Since Thursday’s are normally a short slate and short slates present an interesting challenge, we’re going to cover our overall approach and strategy.
Let’s start with short slates in general and how they offer unique scenarios compared to the large Saturday leagues. Some of the reasons are obvious, fewer games means fewer options. When you have fewer options, the “good” players tend to have slightly higher start percentages compared to larger slates. You can’t fit all the top players and if you miss on the guys that go off, you’re likely sunk. The flip side of the coin, hit on the good players and you tend to clean up. So the challenging part is choosing how to allocate your dollars to fit as many top players as possible. In general, Thursday’s tend to offer fewer punt options and the high end guys are usually overpriced. So Thursday’s I tend to shift more towards raw points as opposed to value. Something else I am willing to do is reallocate money to take on a bit more risk. I am a big advocate of filling every position with someone that is expected to at least produce something. On short night’s I am willing to go with a totally random bottom dollar WR or TE if it means I can fit another bona fide good player or more expected raw points. On to the games we go!
The difficulty at QB jumps off the page and hits me in the face like a ton of bricks. Arguably one of the best fantasy QB’s every week is Connor Halliday, but this week he takes on an angry Stanford team ranked 7th in the nation against the pass. His price tag hasn’t been discounted so Halliday, unfortunately, is probably out of bounds for me. Hogan and Burrell are the next best, but they are hardly a safe bet. Hogan is more consistent, but hasn’t paid this price all year. Burrell is capable of a home run and dud all at the same time. Taysom Hill’s backup, Christian Stewart, looked awful in relief last week. He threw 0 TD’s and 3 picks. Maybe a week to prepare will serve him well, but is that chance you really want to take? Fanduel maybe, but his price is too high on DK. Justin Holman is probably your best cheap option, but again his season high is 22pts against PSU all the way back in week one. His best since is 16pts – hardly overwhelming.
Running back is a little easier; at least to identify who is good, fitting their salary is a different story. Donnel Pumphrey is the no brainer of the night. Don’t let last week discourage you. He is the best back on the board with a great defensive matchup. Don’t worry about price here. Waller & Quezada make nice all around plays, more Waller though. UNLV stinks out loud defensively and Waller should take advantage. Your cheaper options can be found on the New Mexico squad. They deploy a committee approach, but all they do is run. The hardest part is guessing who will see the most carries, but they’re all cheap enough you shouldn’t get hurt too badly if you guess wrong.
Receiver is loaded with a bunch of just okay options tonight. Montgomery and Cajuste are my two favorites due to matchup, but it’s hard to play both. Fresno St. passes the ball enough that you can safely consider both Harper and Watson as decent options (Watson being cheaper). BYU backup QB looked pretty bad, but he also looked Mitch Mathews way quite a bit. Remember its fantasy not reality. I don’t care how bad Stewart is if he keeps chucking it to Mathews. Leslie & Mathews make decent middling type plays. Perriman may be the last standing UCF receiver and that could benefit greatly.
Bring back Jace Amaro and we’ll talk TE
