Total Bases
Miguel Cabrera
Trevor Bauer is fine enough, but Miggy's been on a moderate tear of late. It's not something I use to base my decisions on (he's first in our system for expected total bases today) but it does make me at least feel better picking him. Three multi-hit games in a row has him presumably seeing the ball well and his patient approach should work against Bauer.
Adrian Beltre
Has been crushing lefties this season with an OPS around .975 in that split. I wish the rest of his lineup (especially the lower half) would follow suit. The Rangers are so brutal on offense that I almost want to avoid some of their better hitters, but Beltre can rack up total bases quickly against southpaws. Roenis Elias isn't a bad pitcher, but I think Beltre's platoons make up for the arm.
Hits
Robinson Cano
Cano is a difficult out for even the best of right handed pitchers. Scott Baker isn't one of those dudes. In fact, Baker is one of the more mediocre righties you'll see in the league. He struggles to strike batters out and that puts Cano in a great spot today. The ballpark plays to lefty power, Cano hammers righties and the contact rate has it so that his hit expectation is pretty high. Multiple hits isn't out of the question for this guy today.
Victor Martinez
It's damn near impossible for righty pitchers to strike this guy out. On the season V-Mart's K rate against righties is less than 7%. That's about as low as you'll see among qualified batters and it speaks to how well he sees the ball from the left side of the plate. Trevor Bauer is a high K, high BB pitcher which I don't usually like targeting for the hits category. But I'm willing to make the exception because of how tough an out V-Mart is in this split.
Strikeouts
Max Scherzer
By far the highest strikeout guy going on the day. The question just becomes where to slot him. While he does post big K numbers, he's far from a sure thing on a game-by-game basis. For every double digit K performance, there's a game where he doesn't break seven strikeouts. The Indians are among the top teams in the league against righties, but also strike out 20% of the time. I'm inclined to put him in the seven K slot today and play it safe. He could hit double digits, but I don't think he's a favorite to do so.
Ian Kennedy
Facing the Diamondbacks of the late is what a lot of pitchers experienced for much of the season facing Kennedy's team. The D-Backs have been a brutal bunch and are so very thin up and down the lineup. If Kennedy can limit the walks in this one he has a chance to post a great line. His peripherals on the season have been solid (few too many walks) but I like him for the 6-7 K range at least.
