Total Bases
Jacoby Ellsbury
Our system is consistently high on the guy and I still think there is a lot to like about him going through the rest of the season. Tough to go wrong with any of the Yankees today against Colby Lewis, who could get shelled. Ellsbury would also slot in well for the hits category though I think home runs are going to be tough to come by so I will probably use a guy like Ellsbury to work out the total bases in a variety of fashions rather than maybe one swing of the bat.
Jose Abreu
This is one power guy to target today in Target Field no less. He is facing Phil Hughes, who while having a nice season, is an extreme flyball pitcher. That works out most of the time pretty well in a spacious park. But Abreu isn’t your average hitter. He’s crushing righty pitching this season and cares little for your park factors.
Hits
Scooter Gennett
Assuming he comes back from the quad strain today oh man, what a season this guy is having. Granted he can’t hit lefty pitching even a little bit. But we don’t care about that in DFS. He faces a weak righty today and that’s our main focus. His OPS is around .900 in that side of the platoon split with a 145 wRC+. He keeps his K’s relatively low and should be able to put the bat on the ball against Dillon Gee’s sub seven K/9 rate.
Brett Gardner
Like Ellsbury, Gardner is in a great spot against Lewis today. With the short porch in right, plus Lewis propensity to get lambasted I’m all over Yankees today. Maybe a little too much. Gardner strikes out a little more than I’d like out of this category today, but I’m going with it anyway on the upside.
Strikeouts
Jeff Samardzija
He is the top K’s guy today and unlike some other days I could see him hitting the 9 K mark. Things are just lining up perfectly. His peripherals have been spot on this season. He’s limiting his walks which helps him stay in games longer. The ballpark keeps down power to both sides of the plate which limits big innings and the Astros are among the worst teams in the league against righty pitching. They strike out close to 24% of the time in that split. The is a great place to shoot the moon on Samardzija.
Max Scherzer
Here somewhat by default as he’s the top strikeout pitcher on the slate today. The Angels are a top team against righties, but Scherzer strikes out more than ten batters per nine innings. That number alone makes him a difficult fade even against a slugging team like the Halos, who thankfully do strike out more than 21% of the time. No chance I’m fading Scherzer all together even with the less than ideal opponent.
